Understanding the three IB French pathways
French A: Language & Literature (SL/SSST)
For students with strong prior knowledge of French (typically fluent or near-fluent speakers). Focuses on French language, culture, and literature at an advanced level. Exam components: Paper 1 (guided literary analysis), Paper 2 (essay on studied texts), and IO (individual oral).
French B (Language B SL/HL)
For intermediate-to-advanced learners with solid conversational ability and good grammar foundations. Emphasises practical communication alongside cultural awareness. Exam components: Paper 1 (reading & listening comprehension), Paper 2 (two writing tasks), individual oral, and interactive internal assessment.
French Ab initio
For students with little or no prior French experience. By exam day, students reach communicative intermediate level across a range of contexts. Exam components: Paper 1 (receptive skills), Paper 2 (two written tasks), individual oral, and interactive internal assessment.
IB French exam format & assessment
Written exams (70% of grade): receptive skills (reading and listening) and written production are tested separately. Time management is critical — we drill timed writing in our sessions.
Oral exams (30% of grade): the individual oral requires you to present on a prepared topic and respond to questions. The interactive activity is a real conversation with your examiner. Pronunciation, fluency, and spontaneous expression all matter.
The IB's focus is on communicative competence — your ability to express yourself accurately and fluently in real-world situations. Native teacher guidance makes a real difference here.
